Resumo: Neste texto, abordo o tema do cuidado de si na sua relação com o conhece-te a ti próprio, relação a partir da qual Michel Foucault tematizou a passagem do esquema de subjetivação helenístico ao cristão-moderno. É meu objetivo aclarar as bases do surgimento e funcionamento das ciências humanas dedicadas ao estudo da psique, desde logo a psiquiatria e a psicanálise, mostrando como tomam o sujeito por objeto de conhecimento a partir da prevalência de um conjunto de técnicas de si que, vindas da Antiguidade, transitaram para a modernidade com mutações que permitem retraçar a genealogia do sujeito moderno. Dentre essas técnicas, enfatizarei o dispositivo da confissão.

Abtract: In this text, I address the theme of the care of the self in its relation to the injunction know thyself, a relation through which Michel Foucault thematised the passage from the Hellenistic scheme of subjectivation to the Christian–modern one. My aim is to clarify the foundations of the emergence and functioning of the human sciences devoted to the study of the psyche—most notably psychiatry and psychoanalysis—by showing how they take the subject as an object of knowledge on the basis of the predominance of a set of technologies of the self that, originating in Antiquity, were carried into modernity through transformations that make it possible to retrace the genealogy of the modern subject. Among these techniques, I will emphasise the dispositif of confession.
