Per celebrare e rendere omaggio al 50º anniversario dell’indipendenza della Repubblica di Capo Verde, avvenuta il 5 luglio 1975, abbiamo avuto l’onore di intervistare uno dei suoi maggiori protagonisti e vero Padre della Nazione capoverdiana, il Presidente Pedro Pires, nato nel 1934 sull’isola di Fogo: leader della lotta di liberazione nazionale durante la guerra anticoloniale, al fianco di Amílcar Cabral e Aristides Pereira; capo della delegazione del PAIGC nei negoziati con i portoghesi dopo la Rivoluzione dei Garofani; primo ministro dal 1975 al 1991; e infine Presidente della Repubblica dal 2001 al 2011. Con lui, abbiamo rivisitato alcuni momenti decisivi della storia recente di quella che oggi, grazie alla lotta dei popoli delle ex-colonie e alla Rivoluzione dei Garofani, è una repubblica sorella del Portogallo. Il Presidente Pedro Pires è attualmente presidente della Fondazione Amílcar Cabral, che nel 2024 ha celebrato il centenario della nascita di questa figura centrale della lotta e della riflessione anticoloniale.

To mark and honor the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cape Verde, which was achieved on July 5, 1975, we had the privilege of interviewing one of its most important protagonists and the true Father of the Cape Verdean Nation, President Pedro Pires. Born in 1934 on the island of Fogo, he was a leader of the national liberation struggle during the anti-colonial war alongside Amílcar Cabral and Aristides Pereira; head of the PAIGC delegation in negotiations with the Portuguese following the Carnation Revolution; Prime Minister from 1975 to 1991; and President of the Republic from 2001 to 2011. Together, we revisited some of the pivotal moments in the recent history of what is today, thanks to the struggles of the peoples of the former colonies and the Carnation Revolution, a sister republic of Portugal. President Pedro Pires is currently the head of the Amílcar Cabral Foundation, which in 2024 celebrated the centenary of the birth of this central figure in the anti-colonial struggle and intellectual thought.
